How to build a product launch plan

Last updated: November 2026 · Published by Cydney Mar

A product launch plan is a dated list of tasks, owners, and dependencies that takes a consumer product from an approved idea to its first sales, built backward from your on-sale date.

How to plan a product launch, working backward

  1. 1Write down your target on-sale dateTreat it as a draft until suppliers confirm their dates.
  2. 2Subtract shipping and receiving timeAsk your supplier and freight provider for realistic transit times.
  3. 3Subtract production timeUse the production lead time your factory commits to in writing.
  4. 4Subtract sampling roundsAllow for more than one round; a complete tech pack keeps the count down.
  5. 5Compare with todayIf the dates do not fit, move the launch, simplify the first product, or shrink the first order.

Common questions

What are the six steps of a product launch plan?
The six steps used on this site follow Cydney Mar's Concept-to-Reality Pathway: product clarity, right prototypes, the right suppliers, cost and margins, production-ready, and launch and scale. Each step has its own checklist. The order matters, because skipping ahead, such as sampling before the product is clearly defined, is a common cause of expensive rework.
What are the 7 steps to launch a new product?
A common seven-step version is: confirm the customer and the problem, define the product, develop and approve samples, choose suppliers, lock costs and pricing, prepare production and inventory, then launch and measure. It is the same journey as the six-stage pathway on this site, with launching and measuring split into two separate steps.
What is a launch plan?
A launch plan is the schedule and owner list that turns a launch strategy into dated actions. It says what happens in each stage, who does it, what it depends on, and when it must be finished. For consumer products, a launch plan should work backward from the on-sale date through production, sampling, and supplier lead times.
Can you show a product launch plan sample?
Yes. The product launch plan page on this site includes a sample plan laid out by stage, showing the main task, the decision it unlocks, and what must be finished before the next stage starts. It is a planning example, not a promise of timing, so replace the durations with the lead times your own suppliers confirm.
What goes in a product launch marketing plan?
A product launch marketing plan covers who you are selling to, the message that explains why they should care, the channels you will use to reach them, the launch date, the budget, and how you will measure early sales. For consumer products it also needs photography, packaging that sells on a shelf or screen, and inventory timed to the campaign.
How far ahead should I plan a product launch?
Plan backward from the date you want the product on sale, adding supplier lead times, sampling rounds, production, and shipping. Exact durations depend on the product, the factory, and the season, so confirm lead times with suppliers in writing. Highspot's 2026 launch guide describes the goal: "By launch week, you're dialing in the final 10%, not scrambling at 110%."
How to organise a product launch event?
Set the goal first, such as retailer orders, press coverage, or first customer sales. Confirm inventory will be on hand, choose the format and date, invite the right people, prepare samples and pricing, and plan a clear way to buy on the day. Follow up within days while interest is fresh, and never schedule the event before production dates are confirmed.
Can you give me an example of a product launch?
Yes. Cydney Mar sold her own collections on QVC for more than 15 years across 8 countries, with more than 800 hours of live television. Each airing worked like a launch in miniature: the product, samples, supplier, costs, and inventory all had to be ready before going on air, or the moment was wasted.
